From "Silver Tsunami" to Strategic Solutions: Why the Future of Senior Living Depends on Innovation

Thought Leadership with Carolyn Wescott, Founder & President

The healthcare industry is buzzing about the "Silver Tsunami," but at a recent speech in Miami, AHCA President and CEO Clif Porter laid out the glaring truth: Most senior living communities are simply not ready for the wave that is already hitting our shores.

The numbers are staggering. Over the next 35 years, we will see 15 million more people over the age of 80—and 20% of them will likely require long-term support. Yet, the workforce is shrinking. Today, there are roughly eight workers for every 80-year-old; by 2050, that number will be cut in half.

While new legislative pushes for minimum staffing standards are a vital step toward better care, they also highlight a growing crisis. How do we maintain high standards when the hands to do the work are increasingly hard to find?

A Lesson Learned in the Trenches

I spent the COVID-19 years in contract management for foodservice, and it was a masterclass in resilience—and reality. I saw firsthand how ill-prepared even the best communities were when faced with mass call-outs and the crushing weight of being short-staffed.

While senior living is a deeply fulfilling field, we have to face a hard fact: it isn't always the most attractive destination for the younger generation of workers. If we want to continue providing dignity and care for our elders, we cannot keep doing things the "old way."

Why I Created Plated Foodservice

This workforce reality is exactly why I founded Plated Foodservice.

I realized that we could no longer expect communities to carry the full burden of a massive, fully-staffed kitchen while also managing complex care needs. My mission was born out of a lived experience—a need to do better and a drive to be prepared for what’s coming.

We provide quality, chef-inspired meals that enhance the patient experience while simultaneously relieving the operational pressure on the facility. By rethinking how we serve, we aren't just filling plates; we are helping communities reclaim their focus on care.

The "Silver Tsunami" doesn't have to be a disaster. With the right innovations and a commitment to operational excellence, it can be an opportunity to redefine how we honor our seniors.
